Beaver Creek, Yukon

Beaver Creek is the westernmost community in Canada, located at Milepost 1202 on the Alaska Highway some 20 miles east of the US/Alaska border. The Canadian Customs station, the town’s largest employer, is actually 18 miles east of the border. Until 1983, it used to be located in town, but people kept driving by it by accident. Half the population of around 103 are members of the White River First Nation, a traditionally strong group who maintained an active trading network with goods made from the raw copper they gleaned from their rivers. Today they are an active community who are maintaining the cultural dancing, singing and language heritage of their ancestors.
