Helsingor, Denmark

The city’s name means “neck” in Danish, a reference to its location at a narrow point on the Øresund sound between Denmark and Helsingborg, Sweden. The HH ferry service between the cities is the busiest car-ferry service in the world, despite the construction of a bridge-tunnel crossing between Copenhagen and Malmõ in 2000. Helsingør is famous as the site of the 16th-century Kronborg Castle, widely believed to be the reference for Hamlet’s Elsinore. Near the castle, in a defunct drydock facility, a National Maritime Museum and culture center has been constructed. The museum is up-to-date, with displays and interactive installations tracing the Danish maritime legacy from the Vikings to the modern-day Maersk cargo empire.
