Port Antonio, Jamaica

Carved out of Jamaica’s northeast coast, Port Antonio harbor was the island’s most important banana shipping port, both before and after Hollywood pirate Errol Flynn bought Navy Island and turned it into his private estate. In the years after Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor stopped coming, the town cheerily reverted to shipping bananas. Folly Mansion, the pied-a-terre of the Tiffany heiress, still stands, along with the candy-striped Folly Lighthouse. And the stately Victorian and Georgian homes on Titchfield Peninsula, such as DeMontevin Lodge, are still pleasing to view. The town is alive with colorful arts and crafts, while escaping the mass tourism culture that prevails further west at Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. This is the jungle-wrapped charm you hope for in Jamaica, with waterfalls like the Reach and Somerset Falls, tranquil rivers to ply on bamboo rafts and magnificent beaches such as Frenchman’s Cove, San San and Winnifred.
