Discover one of the Falkland Islands' most extraordinary wildlife destinations on an off-road journey to Volunteer Point, home to the largest breeding colony of King Penguins in the archipelago. Travel across rugged coastal landscapes by specially equipped 4-wheel-drive vehicle, passing historic battlefields from the 1982 Falklands conflict and the site of Port Louis, the Islands' first settlement.
Upon arrival at Volunteer Point, you'll be welcomed by sweeping white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and an abundance of wildlife. Enjoy approximately 90 minutes exploring the area and observing King Penguins in their natural habitat. Their striking silver-grey plumage, vivid orange markings, and impressive stature make them among the most recognizable and photogenic of all penguin species.
In addition to the King Penguins, Volunteer Point is also home to colonies of Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Stroll along the shoreline, take in the peaceful surroundings, and experience the remarkable diversity of the Falkland Islands' coastal ecosystems before beginning the return journey to Stanley.
Please Note
This excursion operates aboard specially adapted 4-wheel-drive vehicles which travel over uneven terrain and unpaved tracks. The driver serves as your local escort and provides commentary throughout the journey. The drive to Volunteer Point is approximately 50 miles (80 km) each way and includes a combination of road and off-road travel. Guests should anticipate walking up to 1.5 miles (2.5 km) over uneven ground, sandy beaches, grassy terrain, and natural pathways at a leisurely pace. Wildlife numbers may vary throughout the season due to breeding cycles, migration patterns, and feeding activity. A boxed lunch is included, featuring a choice of sandwich or alternative vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-sensitive option, along with a sweet treat and beverages. Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, sun protection, and a camera are recommended.
