Get acquainted with the multicultural heritage of Mauritius on this discovery of several places of worship, each representing different religious and ethnic groups.
We'll begin with a visit to the shrine of Father Jacques Désiré Laval, a Roman Catholic missionary who was beatified in 1979. Next, we will visit the island’s oldest Hindu temple. Hinduism is followed by 60% of the population in Mauritius.
Next, we'll head to the former fortress known as the Citadelle where you will stop for a short visit. Next, we'll head to the Buddhist Nam Soon Pagoda for a short visit. Then board the motorcoach and drive past Champs de Mars, which is next to Nam Soon Pagoda. The latter is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most ancient hippodromes.
Next, we'll visit the shrine of Marie Reine de la Paix (Mary, Queen of Peace)—an area of greenery that features an open-air church overlooking the city of Port Louis. Situated on the flanks of the Signal Mountain, it also offers a wonderful view of the city’s "high-rise" buildings as well as the mountain that acts as its backdrop. This area was designated a place of worship in 1940 when Priest James Leen went there to pray for Mauritius to be spared from World War II. Since then, it has become a place of great spiritual meaning, as well as a major attraction for visitors.
