Discover the history and culture of the small provincial city of Ushuaia, with a drive to the countryside, where you can take in the scenic beauty of its landscape and experience the local cuisine.
As you depart the city, travel along the Pan-American Highway towards the north side of the island. View lakes and valleys as you make your way across the Fuegian Andes, passing forests, peat bogs and glaciers en route to Garibaldi Pass at an elevation of nearly 1,500 feet. Before arriving at Garibaldi, you'll stop to view Lake Escondido. At Garibaldi Pass, experience the combination of water, forest and mountains -- perfect scenery for contemplation and relaxation.
Along the way, you will stop for a delicious snack, including a traditional lamb empanada (turnover) and a buffet of finger foods -- sandwiches, Argentinian pastries, quince jelly pie -- and a small cupcake. Enjoy a beverage -- juice, wine, a hot chocolate, tea or a 'mountaineer coffee', made with sugar, orange peel and liqueur.
Before returning to Ushuaia pier, you will stop at the Old Prison Museum -- the first prison ever built in Tierra del Fuego (1896).
Please note:
At the Old Prison Museum, the guide provides some explanation but some parts are self-guided. It is essential that you wear warm layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion.
