Absorb the spirit and excitement of Mumbai, India's commercial capital, with an overview of its most important sights. Lying on the Arabian Sea, this bustling city sprawls over seven islands linked together by causeways and bridges. At the pier, board an air-conditioned motor coach and head first for Mumbai's best-known landmark -- the Gateway of India. This Indo-Saracenic-style archway was built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.
Next is the Prince of Wales Museum, which houses India's finest collection of treasures from ancient archaeological finds to precious Mughal miniatures. The pride of Mumbai is the city's oceanfront Marine Drive. Traverse this busy thoroughfare for a glimpse of crowded Chowpatty Beach.
Travel on through an elegant residential area, contemplating the achievements of Gandhi at Mani Bhawan, his former home. It is now transformed into a museum honoring the spiritual leader's life and work.
Stop at Dhobi Ghat -- Mumbai's vast outdoor laundry. Here, clothes are washed in time-honored fashion that is truly fascinating. En route back to the ship, pass the Victoria Terminus railway station, a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture.
At the end of the tour you can elect to participate in an optional shopping stop (approximately 30 minutes) or return directly to the ship.
Please note:
Tour does not operate on holidays. A camera fee must be paid at the Prince of Wales Museum (at your own expense).
