Colombo is a fascinating city that links the past with the present. Its culture and art are a unique mix of relics of Portuguese, Dutch and English settlements, blended with Indian influences.
Leave the pier on a panoramic drive, passing the commercial district and heading through the Pettah Bazaar area. The views are serene as you drive past Vihara Mahadevi Park, named for a Sinhalese queen. Across the street is the imposing neo-Classical Town Hall.
Cruising through the streets you will drive past some of the city’s colonial gems, the Old Parliament, a century old clock tower, a temple and a mosque.
End your drive at one of Colombo’s oldest heritage site, now a high-end shopping complex – the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct. Enjoy dinner at the highly acclaimed Ministry of Crab. Brainchild of Chef Dharshan Munidasa, this restaurant is a celebration of Sri Lankan heritage and cuisine, paying homage to fresh and diverse local produce, seafood and Sri Lanka’s legendary lagoon crab. With a philosophy of freshness being of utmost importance, they employ a no-freezer policy. With specialized crab utensils to help pry succulent crab meat from its shell, digging in with your hands is encouraged!
Having enjoyed your dinner, return to the pier with a lingering taste of this Emerald Isle!
Please note: Photography of government buildings and the old parliament building is prohibited. Only crab and seafood will be served. The restaurant is not air-conditioned. Wearing tank tops is not permitted for women.
