Embark on a captivating journey from Porto do Lobito to Ponta da Restinga, the most alluring area of the city. With over ten kilometers of pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, this coastal paradise boasts a string of hotels, restaurants, and terraces. The iconic lighthouse stands tall, guiding ships to the country’s second-largest port after Luanda.
As we explore Restinga’s main avenue, take in the architectural splendor of various colonial buildings. Our next stop is Barco Zaire, a national monument located at the tip of Restinga. This historic ship witnessed former president José Eduardo dos Santos’ departure into exile in the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 7, 1961. Today, it stands as a static library and a testament to our past.
Continuing our journey, we head towards Vila da Catumbela, an ancient city of immense regional importance during the Colonial Era. It served as a crucial exit point for the slave trade from provinces like Bié, Huambo, and Moxico, destined for the Americas. The Sugar Route experience begins with sweet cane juice, accompanied by insightful commentary from our guide.
At Forte de São Pedro, enjoy panoramic views of the Catumbela River—the gateway for boats entering and exiting. Our route leads us to Benguela, where Portuguese colonial influence comes alive. Pass by the old City Post Office, adjacent to the iconic Hotel Mombaka. Pause for photographs at the MPLA committee building, affectionately known as ‘Palácio das Bolas.’
Continue along Benguela’s main avenue, passing landmarks like the old Cine-Monumental and Teatro de Benguela. The Sé de Benguela awaits—a testament to our shared history. Stroll along the Marginal da Praia Morena, glimpsing the distant ‘Sombreiro’ and the Bay of Santo António. The Provincial Palace, now the residence of the Provincial Governor, stands as a poignant starting point for slaves bound for the Americas.
Our journey includes a visit to the Populo Church before we return to Lobito. Our final stop: the Caxaramba Distillery, where sugarcane-based spirits and gin are crafted. Enjoy a distillery tour and savor cognac before bidding farewell to this enchanting coastal haven.
Please note:
Guests with walking difficulties can participate with assistance from a spouse or family member. This tour is not recommended for wheelchair users as this is not a wheelchair accessible tour. Guests must be able to board the motorcoaches with little to no assistance. This tour will be split into two groups. One group will explore Lobito, while the other starts in Benguela. The order of sightseeing may vary per group. Guests should wear comfortable shoes, sun hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Guests should bring water bottles from the ship on this tour as the weather may be hot. Angola is a third-world country, coaches are basic and vary in quality but are well-maintained. To support the community, we use local guides. Guides may have strong accents. Tour timing may vary due to high traffic in Lobito. Sites visited may change due to security restrictions and stops could be canceled with short notice (alternate options provided if time allows).
