Depart from the pier and head east along the magnificently scenic Garden Route, passing ancient forests, golden beaches, and craggy peaks adorned with a flowering scrub called fynbos. The landscape is breathtaking, especially in the Wilderness Lakes region that leads to the town of Knysna (pronounced as “nize-nuh”).
Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is a natural paradise surrounded by forest. Its name is believed to mean “place of wood” in Khoisan, the language of the earliest inhabitants.
Despite its natural beauty, Knysna maintains a cosmopolitan charm. During your free time at the waterfront, explore numerous shops and galleries offering high-end crafts. Indulge in dining at local restaurants, where seafood—especially oyster dishes—is a favorite due to Knysna’s proximity to estuaries, rivers, and the ocean.
The waterfront exudes a relaxing and inviting atmosphere, with streets laid out in a simple grid for easy navigation. Across the tidal lagoon, you’ll spot Thesens Island, named after a Norwegian timber merchant who settled here in 1869. After your time in Knysna, rejoin your coach and return to the pier in Mossel Bay.
Please note:
It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. It is also recommended to carry a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock. This tour is manual-wheelchair accessible; guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach with little to no assistance. All wheelchair guests should be accompanied by a family member or assistant who can assist with the storage of the wheelchair. All manual wheelchairs must be collapsible and be easily stored onboard the motor coach. Not all Knysna roads have ramps so guests will need to have an able-bodied person to assist.
