The Island of Mozambique is an island city located in the province of Nampula, in the northern reaches of Mozambique. In fact, it was the country's first capital, and the country took its name from the city. Due to its rich history, manifested by an interesting architectural heritage, the island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With your local guide, you will visit the São Paulo Palace & Museum, see the São Sebastião Fortress and Nossa Senhora de Baluarte Chapel. Watch also for the oldest mosque in Mozambique.
En route back to the pier, you will pass the Old Swahili Door -- a local landmark -- and learn about the history of Stone Town.
Please note:
Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring bottled water and a hat, and wear sunscreen. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. You may be required to remove your footwear at some attractions. The level of guide experience varies in Ilha de Mozambique due the remoteness of its location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
