Traveling by four-wheel-drive vehicle from the port, you'll stop briefly at Thumrait.
Continue to the Khadaf Dunes located at the edge of the Rub Al Khali Desert and drive amid the red sand dunes for a thrilling experience in the desert of Arabia.
The Ubar excavation site is located by the small village of Shishr and is believed to have once been a flourishing trading center for frankincense. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will explore the ruins of this fabled lost city, chronicled in the classical works of T.E. Lawrence as the Atlantis of the Sands. Several small archaeological excavations have revealed an area that is believed to consist of four cities -- remnants of the lost civilization immortalized in A Thousand & One Nights.
Enjoy a simple picnic-style lunch before you return to Salalah via Thumrait.
Notes: The travel time is 2.5 hours each way. A simple lunch box will be provided. Jeeps can accommodate 4 guests, plus 1 driver. Ride will be bumpy and is only meant for guests who are physically fit. Pregnant women or guests with back or neck conditions are not allowed to participate. The 4x4 vehicles are driven caravan-style; your driver may or may not speak English. Individual vehicles do not have a guide, but a lead guide will narrate at each of the sites you visit. Minimum age is 6 years.
Special note: Oman will observe Ramadan from approximately March 10 until April 9, 2024. Visitors are expected to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public. A boxed lunch will be provided and can only be eaten only on the transportation. Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders, midriffs and ankles must be covered. Tight-fitting, transparent or translucent clothing is not permitted. Do not wear white clothing, as it is seldom adequately opaque. Please err on the side of conservatism with your attire.
