Enjoy this approximately 5-mile (8 kms) out-and-back trail to “Eggjarnar” ( The Edges ). Generally considered a moderately challenging route for accomplished hikers, it takes an average of 3 hrs to complete from the ship and back. The first part of the hike could be characterized as a .8 mile (1,3 km) walk through the village until you reach the trailhead. Then you’ll start out on an old narrow mountain paved road which leads up to the Loran-A station which was setup by the Americans during the Second World War. ‘Loran’ refers to long-range navigation. Walk by the ruins of the Loran-A station and of some of the other buildings which can still be seen on “Eggjarnar”. It is a beautiful 1.6 miles (2,7 km) route mostly uphill with scenic views of the village below and the mountains. Before you know it you stand on the top of a mountain which ends suddenly and turns into a vertical cliff, and you see right down to the braking waves of the North Atlantic more than 200 meters below you. Eggjarnar is the edge of a row of mountains south of the village. Going back to the ship is the same route.
Please note: Wear sturdy hiking shoes and waterproof layers. Participants must be reasonably fit and manage the 1.6 mile (2,7 km) uphill climb. It is a strenuous hike. Views are weather-dependent. Minimum elevation is 5 meters and maximum elevation is 190 meters. Please be sure to book your included experience in advance as space may be limited on your specific choice.
