From Vagur head towards the southern tip of the Faroes Islands. We go through the tunnel and reach the village of Sumba before we travel up to the scenic, ridge-top road which winds up the mountain side, pausing close to the top for a photo stop. Here we see Suduroy’s steep western side to the north with Beinisvord promontory with its 470 meters and the luscious grass slopes to the east; in a blink, the true essence of the Faroe Islands with mountains and fjords, villages and valleys, birds and sheep and nature. Only a short 5-minute walk from the coach you are on the edge with this fantastic scenery.
Winding down again on the other side we drive to Akraberg and the lighthouse on the southernmost tip of the Faroe Islands. The name Akraberg derives from akur (cereal field). In 1909, a lighthouse and some family houses were built in Akraberg. Today, there are only two houses and a lighthouse, but there are no inhabitants. The last lighthouse keeper and his family moved away a terrible hurricane in December 1988. Nobody has lived there since. Entrance is included for a short self-guided visit of the small village museum which has a collection of stuffed birds on display and various old artifacts. The museum has also historical information on plaques about historical events in the settlements of Sumba, Lopra, Akrar, Vikarbyrgi and Akraberg.
After the visit in Akraberg we make a short stop in Sumba village before we head back to the ship.
Please note: Wear sturdy walking shoes and waterproof layers. Please be sure to book your included experience in advance as space may be limited on your specific choice.
