Head to downtown Lima where you will visit the Aliaga House -- an ancient vice regal house granted by Francisco Pizarro to one of his captains, Jerónimo de Aliaga. The construction of this house started in 1535. This genuine jewel of colonial architecture is currently inhabited by his descendants. You will then get to know the Main Square where Lima was first founded as "The City of Kings" in 1535. When Peru proclaimed its independence from the Spanish Crown in 1821, Lima was already known by its name.
At the Main Square, you can see the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Lima Cathedral where you will observe its magnificent architecture, as well as observe and hear about the history of the Saint Francis Monastery. Next, head over to the Pueblo Libre district to visit the Larco Museum founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle in 1926. The visit to this museum provides understanding of over five thousand years of Peruvian history -- highlighting the development achieved by the cultures that flourished before the Inca Empire. Located inside a vice regal mansion and built on a pre-Columbian pyramid from the 7th century, the museum shows the most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver artifacts. It also features pieces of erotic art. Lunch will be served at the Cafe del Museo prior to returning to the ship.
Please Note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
