Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Ecuador’s cacao country, where you’ll taste and explore some of the finest chocolate in the world—crafted from authentic Ecuadorian cacao.
Your day begins with a scenic drive inland from the port, following the coastal route toward the fertile Guayas region. As you travel, your guide will share fascinating insights into Guayaquil’s history, Ecuador’s rich biodiversity, and its global reputation for producing premium-quality cacao. Along the way, enjoy glimpses of the Cerro Blanco Protected Forest, a haven for native wildlife and tropical vegetation.
Ecuador has long been recognized as a leading producer of high-grade cacao. For decades, its beans were exported to Europe and North America, where they were processed and sold under prestigious labels like Swiss or Belgian chocolate. Today, Ecuadorian companies are reclaiming this legacy by producing world-class chocolate domestically, allowing the country’s cacao to receive the recognition it truly deserves.
Your destination is Hacienda El Castillo, a historic estate nestled in lush, green landscapes. This working farm is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and organic cacao cultivation, using eco-conscious techniques that help preserve Ecuador’s natural biodiversity and reduce the environmental impact of farming.
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing cacao juice and a delicious snack of crispy fried plantains paired with fresh regional cheese. Take in the stunning views from the main house before setting off on a guided tour of the cacao plantation. Here, you’ll witness each stage of the chocolate-making process—planting, harvesting, fermenting, and drying—and taste cacao at various stages to discover its evolving flavors and textures.
After the plantation tour, return to the main house for a traditional Ecuadorian lunch, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that reflect the region’s culinary heritage.
During lunch, enjoy a lively folk dance performance that showcases the vibrant rhythms and traditions of Coastal Ecuador. Dancers in colorful costumes bring to life the stories and melodies passed down through generations, offering a joyful celebration of the region’s cultural identity.
To conclude your experience, visit the estate’s chocolate factory to see how the harvested cacao is transformed into finished chocolate bars. Learn about the techniques used to refine flavor and texture, and gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind Ecuadorian chocolate.
As the day comes to a close, board your motorcoach for the relaxing return journey to the port, carrying with you the rich flavors and cultural memories of Ecuador’s cacao legacy.
