Journey to Varela Zarranz Winery, one of the oldest and most beautiful wine establishments in Uruguay. A path lined with centenary olive trees will lead you through the vineyards to the winery, founded at the end of the 19th century, being today a heritage of Uruguayan viticulture.
A family member will guide you on a tour, explaining the history of the establishment and the process of winemaking, including the traditional Champenoise method under which the family elaborates natural sparkling wines. You will also visit the barrel room and the old cellar where it is treasured the largest collection of French oak barrels in use in Uruguay, dating from 1903. Do not forget to check out the collection of vintage carriages that are kept on site.
Then, relax and enjoy a typical Uruguayan barbecue and taste the different wine lines including the family’s natural sparkling wine.
Please notes:
Tour involves approximately 35 minutes of moderate walking. There are approximately 20 steps to negotiate inside the wine cellar. It is recommended that guests wear comfortable flat shoes. Guests are able to purchase wine at the end of the tour. US dollars and credit cards are accepted.
