Discover the many faces of Salvador da Bahia with a glimpse of the city's intriguing cultural mix of African and European heritage. See the historic and modern parts of Salvador.
A panoramic drive takes you past the Farol da Barra -- one of the most famous lighthouses in Brazil -- and to the Pelourinho District, which is Salvador's Old Town. At the Municipal Square, you'll see Lacerda's Elevator, linking the upper and lower cities, as well as Baía de Todos Santos (All Saints Bay). Walk to Terreiro de Jesus Square to see, from the outside, the Baroque cathedral -- formerly the chapel of the largest Jesuit seminary outside Rome. Its plain exterior masks one of the most beautiful churches in the city.
Visit Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Man. This beautiful church in Pelourinho Square dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. Slaves started to build the church because they weren't allowed to enter the other churches in the city. Such was their dedication that they worked during the day for their masters and built the church at night. They formed the brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men of Pelourinho. The church was completed about 100 years after construction began and today is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Salvador.
Stroll Through Pelourinho's narrow cobblestone streets, lined with old buildings that now house art galleries, jewelry and souvenir shops. The Largo do Pelourinho is a colonial square and pillory where slaves and prisoners were once punished in full view of the gentry.
Sao Francisco Church boasts an opulent interior featuring cedar woodcarvings covered in gold leaf. The carvings took 28 years to complete. Enjoy 20 minutes at leisure for photos, sampling coconut water or exploring independently. boasts an opulent interior featuring cedar woodcarvings covered in gold leaf. Sample a delicious local snack called Acaraje -- peeled black-eyed peas formed into a ball and deep-fried in palm oil -- and watch a 30-minute a Capoeira presentation. This uniquely Brazilian art form combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Caipirinha cocktails and mineral water are also offered.
