Explore surprising Valparaiso, a city that consists of two completely different sections. The first is known as El Plan—this is the lower part adjacent to the port area. Here, Plaza Sotomayor is dominated by the Naval Headquarters building and the impressive monument to the Heroes of Iquique. A drive up the hillside leads you to the other section—Los Cerros, or El Plan Alto. This area, covering some 42 hills, is comprised of a jumbled mass of fine mansions, tattered houses and shacks spread around in utter confusion along the narrow streets. Several funiculars and a steep winding road connect the port and the hilltop areas, from where there is a superb view of the city and the bay. Heading north, you will pass through the thriving downtown area and continue to the fashionable resort of Viña del Mar. Entering Viña del Mar, you will see the resort’s best-known landmark—the famous floral clock. You’ll stop briefly to admire the exterior of the impressive casino, built in the 1930s, renovated in 2003, and set in beautiful gardens. A visit to the Fonck Museum is also included. The museum exhibits an extensive and interesting collection of objects from Easter Island and the Chilean mainland, including a fine exhibit of Mapuche native silver.
