Skagway, Alaska, US

No town in Alaska makes more of its Gold Rush history than Skagway. It was the terminus from which optimistic miners set off up the daunting Chilkoot Trail bound for the Yukon gold fields. Today the White Pass Yukon Railway runs a scenic train ride along part of the original roadbed. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park offers displays and even tours to the defunct ghost town of Dyea. An array of tours are available, from helicopter and seaplane tours to dog-mushing, sport fishing, gold panning, and canoe trips on the lake below Davidson Glacier and town tours in vintage national parks busses. Several establishments also offer themed performances of various sorts.
