Sunrise at Lizard Island

Lizard Island is a granite island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Much of the island is a National Park, while the northwestern side is a world-famous luxury resort. Along with three smaller islands, Palfrey, South and Bird, their fringing reef encircles a large 30-foot deep Blue Lagoon. The island was named in 1770 by none other than Captain James Cook, who thought the name appropriate since lizards were the only animals he saw there. Cook used the peak on the island to observe a way through the maze of reefs to the open sea. It has ever since been called “Cook’s Look.”
