Picturesque Avalon on Santa Catalina Island is the southernmost city in Los Angeles County, California. Located 22 miles off the Pacific Coast, its blue, yacht-filled harbor is ringed by steep bluffs and crowned by the Catalina Casino, built in 1929 by the chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. and handsomely symbolizing the island’s dedication the enjoyment of visitors. 85 percent of the island is an Open Space Conservancy, including the Wrigley Botanical Garden. Beaches, trails and excursions by glass-bottomed boats and dolphin-watching craft are the most popular pastimes for visitors, most of whom arrive by high-speed ferries from the mainland.
