Tok was founded in 1942 as a base camp for construction of the Alaska Highway. The town earned the nickname “Million Dollar Camp” for its costs of construction and maintenance. Just 93 miles from the Canadian border, Tok is the state’s initial welcome to Visitors on the Highway. The town is dominated by the Mainstreet Visitors Center, a 7,000 square foot facility that is said to be the largest log structure in the world. The center is chockful of brochures, maps and visitor information on Alaska and the Yukon. The Sled Dog Capital of Alaska hosts many mushing events, and the area has a wealth of breeders and mushers. From here, roads lead on to Valdez, Anchorage, Fairbanks and other Alaska destinations.
