Get away to Great Bird Island, a nature lover's delight, where pristine shoreline, dense vegetation, and vibrant coral reefs provide a haven for wildlife.
Board air-conditioned transportation for a 25-minute scenic drive to Parham Marina -- a picturesque journey through the center of the island. Take a boat ride through the North Sound islands and mangroves to Great Bird Island -- inarguably one of Antigua's best locations for snorkeling. Great Bird Island is a 20-acre desert island, named by sailors who were amazed at the number of birds living and nesting there. It is a miniature paradise of white sand beaches at either end of the sandbar.
After a safety briefing, put on your mask, fins, and a buoyancy belt to go snorkeling with expert guides in crystal-clear water. Snorkeling not for you? Simply swim from the beach or relax in the sun.
Hike up the hilltop trail for wonderful views of outlying islands and Antigua -- you may spot migrating whales from December to May, sea turtles, and many varieties of birds. It is also one of the few places you can see an Antiguan racer snake in the wild if you're lucky. They are only nine inches long and completely harmless. Endangered creatures found here include red-billed tropic birds, brown pelicans, rare lizards, West Indian whistling ducks, and the magnificent frigate bird (man o' war bird). Great Bird Island is a true eco-island paradise.
Relax over a delicious Caribbean lunch of barbequed chicken, pasta, and green salad with local banana bread for dessert; soft drinks, water, and rum punch are served on the beach.
Suitably relaxed and educated, return to Parham Marina and to the ship.
Please note: Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Swim at your own risk. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed. Bring binoculars.
