Roman Walls of Lugo:
"The walls of Lugo were built in the later part of the 3rd century to defend the Roman town of Lucus. The entire circuit survives intact and is the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe."
Depart the pier for a scenic 90-minute drive to Lugo, is the only European city surrounded by Roman walls that are still completely intact. With a perimeter of over one mile and a height of over 25ft, the walls still contain 71 of the 85 original towers and 10 entrance gates, the walls are a testimony to the prosperous history of a city that was once the hub of a gold rich region.
Inside the walls, you will find St. Mary's Cathedral, a Romanesque church which houses a chapel dedicated to San Froilán, Lugo’s patron saint, and boasts the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, also featured on the cities coat of arms.
Next, the Gothic Church of Saint Francis. Built in the 15th century alongside the ancient Convent of St. Francis, of which today only the cloister remains. The cloister is now one the locations of the Provincial Museum of Lugo and it houses, among other things, a collection of Galician art.
Continue to the Church of San Dominic, dating back to the 14th century before arriving at the Palace of the Arts.
Enjoy a tapas lunch accompanied local wine.
After lunch, enjoy some free time for shopping before returning to Ferrol.
