Of all Croatia's beautiful islands, Korcula is perhaps the most visibly reminiscent with history. Its significant structures range from Marco Polo's house to medieval fortifications erected to keep Turkish invaders out and pirates firmly at bay. These landmarks make Korcula a fascinating town to explore. The main street does not cleanly bisect the town; but rather it zig-zags up the hill and down the other side, with the side streets feeding into it at an angle. None of this is by accident of course. The zig-zags block the cold winter winds that blow in off the sea, while the herringbone layout of the side streets tempers the heat of the midday sun with some natural 'air-conditioning'.
On your walking tour, you will weave among the cobblestone streets of one of the most beautiful towns in Dalmatia. Stroll through the centuries and through a myriad of art forms. You'll start with the 14th- through 16th-century fortifications, passing the Rector's palace with its 15th-century turrets.
Step into the City Museum, housed in a 16th-century mansion and filled with an impressive array of artifacts that bring Korcula's history to life.
You will also visit the small cathedral and the Museum of Icons, and see from the outside the house where Marco Polo is believed to have been born.
