Today, you will discover Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, with a population of 400,000 and a flourishing economy.
Among Palma's lovely sights is the Gothic-style Bellver Castle, a circle-shaped castle built in the early 14th century. Visit inside and then admire from the outside the extensive panoramic landscape below, across the city and surrounding countryside.
Continue the drive along the Paseo Maritimo -- the seaside boulevard. Reaching the Parc de la Mar Sea Park, you'll take in the beautiful views of the cathedral and the Almudaina Palace.
Considered one of Spain's best examples of Gothic architecture, the Palma Cathedral was built around 1230 but was not completed until the 17th century. The interior was also remodeled by the famed Antoni Gaudí and is lit by stained-glass windows, the largest of which is the great rose window in the apse. The Royal Chapel contains the remains of King Jaime II, and a visit to the cathedral museum reveals an array of sacred objects.
Next door stands the Almudaina Palace -- a monument converted from an Arab fortress into the residence of the Kings of Mallorca. Your guide will point out some of the building's most important aspects from the outside. Enjoy a refreshment nearby.
