Since the 15th century, explorers journeyed in search of a corridor connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, voyaging around Greenland and through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. These early seafarers were turned back time and again by treacherous weather conditions and thick sea ice. On the Zodiac cruise along the river, guests came upon remnants of Hudson Bay Company hunting sheds, a glimpse into the past with old traps and weathered oil barrels. The Arctic is a tundra desert, and the vivid color was courtesy of lichen, one of the Arctic's many wonders. With over 8,600 recorded types, lichen plays a critical role in helping to shape this unique environment.
