This port on the central Norwegian coast just south of the Arctic Circle is a fine place from which to explore this unique landscape. Norwegians say that after God finished building the world, He found Himself with nothing left but rocks, so He shaped them into the most beautiful rock pile under Heaven. It’s easy to believe here. On nearby Torget island, the mountain of Torghatten has a picturesque hole clear through it, halfway up. In the Vega Archipelago close by, UNESCO has inscribed a World Heritage Site of mixed geographic and cultural importance, based partly on the traditional harvesting of eider down from duck nests. The Lokalmatbutikken store sells hundreds of delicacies found only in this region. Climb the high, arching bridge for memorable views of the mountains and the sound.
